So I have been seeking some help from the IRS, to locate and confirm my husband's Employee Identification Number. We had forgotten he ever had one. He has to have one to be my "boss" so I can get paid.
Last Friday I spent an hour on hold, and the very helpful person who finally answered told me I had been given the wrong number. She gave me the right one. I called it and was on hold for two hours. The less than helpful person absolutely did not want to facilitate Bob's quest. I did what I needed, and printed a DPOA and had it notarized. I realized too late that the notary had made an error on the page with the date. I knew I would have to wait until after the morning appointment today to start over.
The notary was not in, Bob took a nap. I decided to try again anyway, by calling the right number first. The automated system said the wait would be too long, then it OFFERED TO PUT ME ON A CALL BACK LIST. And they called me back in less than an hour.
The person I connected with was so helpful and understanding. She took Bob's verbal assertion that I could speak for him. She searched the records, she found the old number, issued in September 2007. The fax would not go through (I misread my own writing) so they are mailing what I need. It may take as much as two weeks, but Yay!
The whole situation is looking up.

I guess finding it could be quite a task, given how massive the search might be. Sure, their big databases make it easy to pull information, but with millions upon millions of records, it could take a while to find exactly what you need. And with duplicate names in the mix, it would probably take some extra time to verify that the information they give you is actually correct.

I’m so glad you got someone who could help you. Federal bureaucrats tend to forget that people don’t call them because they want to, but because they have to.
