When Pit Bulls Attack

United States

I wrote a post here last week about how I was seeing cases of pit bull attacks being heard before Justice Judy and most of them were pit bulls attacking chihuahuas specifically. I decided to do a little research about pit bull attacks in the USA. Pit Bulls, as a breed, only account for 6-8% of the dog population, yet they cause more than 65% of all fatal dog attacks in the USA. In a 13 year period between 2010-2023 there were 478 fatal dog bite attacks. Of those 478, pit bulls accounted for more than half at 245 fatal bites. And that's not even counting the non-fatal dog bites and attacks! There were 59 pit bull attacks resulting in deaths in 2023 with 96 total deaths attributed to dog bites in that year.

Perhaps they believe they are rats and attack them. I am not a dog person at all, and chihuahuas annoy me immensely. Dog bites are serious. Perhaps the pit bull bites are so many because often people who encourage aggressiveness or neglect dogs are pit bull owners.

Pit Bulls and Rottweilers should be illegal across the US. Nobody needs a dog that can and will attack a human and can kill them.

I haven't researched this part, but I've heard that the jaws of pit bulls are configured in such a way that they clamp down and continue to bite and are super strong.

@LooeyVille Pit Bulls are trained not to turn loose once they achieve their target. But their jaws don't lock closed. Their jaws are just like any other dog jaws.

Just now
Years ago I don't remember ever hearing about fatal dog attacks; now they seem to be much more common. But then I guess there are also a lot more dogs - at least there are here.
