Give the news a rest.

Among today’s news reports much has been made of the demise of Ted Turner, the man credited with bringing about the monster that is 24 hour live news streaming. This is something that should be regretted rather than celebrated. It is an odious intrusion into human life and needs to be switched off. Is the news really that important that it needs to run continually? Are hourly updates not sufficient? Does repeating the details of an event ad nauseam make it any more important? And the newscasters who have to try continually to make what they already said five minutes before seem fresh, new and urgent are fighting a losing battle, but no-one has told them. And what is being reported isn’t that important anyway, it’s only seen as important because we’ve been told it is important - and so many suckers have fallen for it. It’s important to know what’s going on in the world, but not on a 24 hour drip feed like you’re on intravenous antibiotics. Constant coverage only serves to numb the listeners, and it’s not helpful - it’s a sensationalist curse. Turn it off. Will you, or are you an addict colluding in the perpetuation of all the nonsense?

Beyond everything you have said here, I think one of the BIGGEST pitfalls has been that because of the 24-hour news cycle, most of the time is filled with COMMENTATORS. And that's not news. But it gets MARKETED as news, and people BELIEVE its news, when it's really just...commentary. Not that I have issue with commentary in general. I am a commentator myself and have made part of my living from it. But I don't call it NEWS. I call it for what it is. Commentary that is based on opinion, on the BASIS of facts, but still opinion nonetheless.

I am not one that celebrates this. It is the few things I wish my mother hadn’t partaken. Decades before dementia, she went through a health crisis, and pain kept her awake for hours into the night. What was on all night? 24 hour news channels. When I see them airing now, that’s all I can think.

I have been feeling anxious this week, so I do not follow much news. As for Turner, he was blessed with 84 years.
