Illegal to die in Longyearbyen, Norway?

That is the incorrect myth that has been going around for years. It is a myth only. It seems that this place in Norway has banned the burying of bodies in the area due to the permafrost there. Bodies are now flown to other locals for burial. It seems that the permafrost preserves a corpse rather than letting it decompose naturally. Authorities ceased new burials to prevent the spread of preserved pathogens from the past. In 1998 scientists found some viable traces of the Spanish Flu virus from 1918 when some bodies were exhumed.

I did not know that it is illegal to bury a corpse in one area in Norway due to the permafrost there.

I thought Longyearbyen was in Svalbard anyway? Although I guess that is Norwegian territory, just a very long way away from Norway itself.

That's interesting. I'd never thought about burying bodies in such cold areas.

I hadn't either. I want to be cremated. Save a lot of trouble.

These viruses really haunt us as humans. Can come back ages later.
