My Grandmother and Memorial Day

When I was about 8 my mom and I had a trailer on my grandparents land for awhile. Grandma watched me while my mom worked. I used to go with Grams on Memorial Day. My uncle would drive her to all the cemeteries around the country. Grams was the type of person who remembered people and where they were buried. I would help her prepare the bouquets and they were put in tall juice cans and covered with aluminum foil. She gave me jobs to do and the bouquets were put in the back of Uncle Fred's Chevy truck. And then off we'd go. We went to Nyssa, Homedale, and two here in Boise. I'm sure there are more I have forgotten down through the 60+ years. My uncle traveled the back roads so we saw alot of cows and farmland. He knew the little hole in the wall cafes with the best food and we would stop off for dinner. My grandmother remembered folks like the naturalist doctor she visited for some ailments in her early life, and a neighbor she'd had when they first moved to the little house on what used to be Rose Lane back in 1924. It amazes me looking back now too that she remembered where all the graves were. I had trouble finding my dad's when I went to visit him a few years ago. She remembered them all. Soldiers , family and friends alike. It was a good experience, and though a sad thing I enjoyed the drive and spending time with my uncle and my grandmother.

She taught you respect, while spending the time with you. No better way to learn it than by doing it.
