On This Day...

I currently have two hats that would make it obvious that I am a United States Navy Veteran. My USS Enterprise hat with my metal crow on it, and my "proudly served" navy hat. If I wore them today, I would likely be thanked for my service, and that would still be respectful and even appropriate. However, I will not wear either of those hats today. This day is not about veterans. But rather, it is about honoring, remembering and saluting the men and women of our armed forces who died in the line of service, offering our great nation the ultimate of sacrifices. Of course, we all celebrate this day with backyard barbecues, with family and friends. I will be attending a pool party today at my sister and brother-in-law's. But it is important to take a moment to remember why we have this day, and why it is important. Make sure you're flag is flown boldly and proudly today. Be it not faded or tattered. And take a moment to reflect on the freedoms we have, and how they came to be, and more importantly, what was given to preserve them.

I noticed in the past that so many do not understand the meaning of this celebration. It's to remember those who lost their life, not for all those who served.

People continue to get this confused all the time. I make it a point to remind people what this day is for, and what it means, and most importantly, what it celebrates and honors.

@porwest - People tend not to know what a celebration means. I had several people asking why Europeans do not celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thanks for your service. I agree. It's important to reflect on the true meaning of our "Holidays."

Thank you for explaining Memorial Day to the many who don't understand what it stands for. I was going to do this later. You beat me to it.
