Why so surprised?

Is kindness rare these days? Recently someone purchased an item from me and I offered them another one for free. She was shocked and surprised from her expression and comments. She kept saying I can pay for it and I kept telling her, "no it is free" Then she looked at me in awe and said, "that is so kind of you", "you are so kind" and went on and on about it. This had me wondering about back in the day when it seemed like an act of kindness would be normal. You do a kind deed for someone and most likely the response would be "thanks" and it ends there. However, from this person's reaction I began to wonder if it is now a totally unexpected gesture, a rare act. I sure hope not.

i think i would react the same cause, some people would charge even air and if someone offers you something additionally and free, it's hard to believe it.i remember a young man, we came at the same time in front of one medical building and he showed me i could go in first. we also went to the same office so, i felt i was treated twice with his kindness. i think i thanked him 2times but in my heart and now, i was amazed and thanked him 100 times. people usually hurry up and go first, noone is being considerate these days and if someone is, i feel, many would use it against us. also, when someone is kind to you and is of opposite gender, you also question is he being that kind only to you or to others.still, i wish him all the best.

I try not to over think kindness. I am just happy when someone is kind to me or when I am kind to others.

@Freelanzer you are right. if someone is kind to you, we should forward that feeling and give it back as well

It is sad, but people have become suspicious of kind acts because of the selfishness exhibited by people these days.

I'm sure she was genuinely surprised that you offered her one for free. I do think kindness is something we don't hear about every day. That was really nice of you to gift her with a free item.
