Lantern Floating Ceremony

On August 15, 2026, there will be a lantern floating ceremony held at Julia Davis Park near the Boise River here in Boise, Idaho. Participants will gather between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to decorate their lanterns with messages of peace and reflection. At night fall they will launch their lanterns from the water's edge.
A Shinnyo-en Buddhist Order lantern floating tradition was started in Hawaii around 1999 and is now celebrated each year on Memorial Day. Between 40,000 and 50,000 people participate at Ala Moana Beach Park. 6,000 lanterns can be seen floating at sunset.
