Africa and four hemispheres

I read somewhere today that Africa spans four hemispheres – north, south, east and west. I didn’t really know about east and west hemispheres but it seems the Western Hemisphere lies west of the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) and east of the 180th meridian and the Eastern Hemisphere is the other half. It covers almost 12 million square miles and the second largest continent after Asia. There is an online Seterra quiz to place all the names of the African states. On a good day, I can do this. Sometimes one or two elude me which is most annoying. Did you know about the east and west hemispheres? The photo is mine, taken at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, England.

The safari park was really something. You could drive through a number of paddocks with wild animals in them.

Yes, Africa is the only continent that spans all four hemispheres, I remember we learnt that in school. Africa is the second largest continent after Asia. I am sure I would fail to name all African states, too many changed their name since I was a student.

Certainly a lot have changed their names. When you do the quiz if you don't get the spelling correct it won't move on.

@JudyEv I remember the old names, but I know that many changed through the years.

Nope no idea..I would not be able to label African states if you paid me, although when I was young I knew a lot of them. Alot of the names have changed.

I gave myself a challenge as I had no idea where any of them were.

They say that you learn something new everyday, I can go back to bed now, I've learned something. It is interesting though.

I'd never heard of east and west hemispheres. That was quite a surprise to me.

@JudyEv That I did not know. People are always dreaming up more stuff to annoy us with. I do like Africa though. I think I can name and place all its countries. Malawi stumps quite a few people.
