Yay or Nay to Garage/Yard Sales

So our church is having a garage sale to raise money for the youth group’s mission trips this summer. Today and tomorrow is a city wide one, so a lot of people will be out and looking.
I remember my parents used to get up early in the spring and summer to hit the garage sales. One year when money was really tight, I suggested we get some of our Christmas presents for each other via garage sale. I mean, my mom found a mint condition Chip Hilton book for my dad for Christmas that at the time was worth $200. You can find things not even out of their packaging (it also depends on the city you garage sale in).
Last year, I think the teens made $1,100, which wasn’t all they needed, but the church came up with the rest.
Do you like garage/yard/estate sales?
Update: I found out the brand new luggage I donated was the second thing that sold! Yay, I helped contribute!

Don't know that I've ever been to one except just to talk to a neighbor who was having one. I've never had one...when my stuff gets "old" or I don't use it anymore, I ask a neighbor or a relative if they need it. If not, I give it to a charity.

@AmbiePam — I think Goodwill might still pick up in our area. I have an old mirror that sits on top of a large dresser that I need to get rid of.

@FourWalls My mom and I once went to the saddest Salvation Army thrift store I’ve ever seen in my life. We decided from then on to donate our stuff there. We didn’t have a lot of money, but we took care of our items. That particular store was just pathetic, and the people who shopped there didn’t get access to much.

I love them, but can't get to many now, of course. My street and the adjoining street have had several yard sales the past few weeks, and I did walk over to a few of them. I got a box of new light bulbs for $2. I was looking at a big sack of pretty yarns and the lady told me to please just take them--so I thanked her and I did. Some of the ladies at the local assisted living facility not far from my home love to crochet and knit, and they do not always have the means to do that, so I dropped the yarn off over there. But I do love a good yard sale.

They are always appreciative of yarn, puzzles, good books—things to do and to keep active. We never know what our future could hold, it’s just such a small thing to do and cost me nothing but a few minutes of my time. Thanks!

I think garage sales are a great way to bring in some money. In Latvia many people could have used the additional money from garage sales but they were not allowed,

I like garage sales since I can find items that are collectable items such as musical compact discs or movies on compact disc for sale.

I’m biased because of my mother’s filthy hoarding and she stopped at every single yard sale out there, accumulating way too much stuff. So no, I do not like yard sales

That is awesome. I am sure the church appreciated it. I do like them..but I went to a good one last year and they were adverisitng the same one in the Next Door newsletter..last weekend..but I don't need anything, and didn't want to drive all the way there. If I do buy something it will be closer to home.

I used to do yard/garage sales, I even had a couple of them when I was younger.
I don't really do them anymore because I don't really need anything as badly as I did when our son was young and would want something that I knew would be short term in his life.

Before the pandemic, Pretty and I would stop at any garbage sales we found as we drove around the city but since the pandemic, we rarely stop at any.
We've had three or four garbage sales ourselves and got rid of a lot of stuff we didn't need anymore but it was too much work. Now, we take anything we could have sold and offered it to friends who might need it or to the thrift stores in our area.
We really should go through the garage again and donate more "stuff". Most of the stuff in the garage we haven't even looked at since we moved here over ten years ago.
