Happy Saturday! I’m enjoying the weather and the music. I’m ready to give you another song that you may remember from the rockin’ 70s, complete with a reference to the Beatles! Well, three of the Fab Four anyway. Here’s today’s song. Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You - Sugarloaf Don’t know WHY Ringo didn’t get a mention. (That’s okay, he has his own song coming up!) Sugarloaf was basically a two-hit wonder band. This song is about trying to get a record deal for the first hit, “Green Eyed Lady.” The story goes that Sugarloaf tried to get signed to Columbia Records in 1970 and got turned down (complete with a line about them sounding like the Beatles, which they emphasize in this song with the opening guitar riff from “I Feel Fine”). Sugarloaf eventually signed with Liberty Records and released “Green Eyed Lady,” which became a hit. Waddaya know, Columbia Records suddenly became interested in the band and wanted to sign them! Needless to say, the band gave them the title line, just like the label had done four years earlier. Why I listened to Casey Kasem as a teenager, part 3,583,601: the phone number being dialed on the then-rare touch tone at the end of the song is the switchboard to the White House. Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You Written by Jerry Corbetta and John Carter Recorded by Sugarloaf From Don’t Call Us - We’ll Call You, 1974 BEATLE REFERENCE LYRICS: Yeah, it sounds like John, Paul, and George

Some of these groups must have such high hopes when they start out.

A guy who worked for a subsidiary of Warner Brothers Records said that less than 1% of all the original acts ever get heard by an “industry” person. Of that 1%, 99% of them never get a second listen. Of that 1%, 99% ever get signed. When you see how minuscule the numbers are for acts that manage to get a record released and then maybe become successful, you wonder how anyone could get their hopes up for anything. But I guess it’s natural to think “we’re the exception to the rule.”

@JudyEv — breaks up a lot of bands. Funny thing was that the Plimsouls broke up, right before they had their biggest success (their song “A Million Miles Away” gained popularity when it was used in the movie Valley Girls). A lot of bands have made a couple of albums and broken up, and years later a band that gets very successful cites that band as a major influence. I think in America, Big Star is one of the best examples of that.
