Two things you’re learning this month, if nothing else, as we celebrate Paul McCartney’s 84th birthday. One, you probably had no idea there were this many references to the Beatles in songs. Two, you probably had no idea there were this many references to the Beatles in country songs.
Happy to oblige! Here’s today’s “Linda? NO!” song for you.
It’s Alright - Waylon Jennings
Ol’ Waylon dropped a lot of names in this song. It’s kind of cute, too, that he started this album off with a J.J. Cale song (“Clyde”), then the first line in this song, which follows it, is, “J.J. Cale’s my hero, the best I ever heard.” He also dropped George Jones’ name in there, along with a lot of truth (“George might show up flyin’ high if George shows up at all”… “if we all sounded like we wanted to, we’d all sound like George Jones”). And, of course, he had to mention his wife, Jessi Colter.
Amid all of that, he mentioned the Beatles. Yes, they sound out of place in the content of the song praising Cale and Jones, but like the title says, it’s all right!
It’s Alright

Waylon could have made "Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)" interesting.

This was from the same time that he did the theme to The Dukes of Hazzard.

Sort of glad to hear it. Waylon covered “He Went to Paris” on that album.

Hard to believe I have so many of them, isn’t it! There’s even a jazz song coming up with a Beatles reference!
