A bonus harvest!

The day before yesterday we realised we had run our of garlic, so had to beg a spare clove from our lodgers, and put it on the shopping list. Then yesterday I was weeding a corner of the veg plot, and among a clump of grass I found what must, a couple of years ago, have been a forgotten garlic clove, now multiplied into a whole bunch! Admittedly they are a bit on the small side but still perfectly usable so we won’t need to buy any after all – especially as I did actually plant garlic this year as well so the ‘proper’ harvest is yet to come! I’ve hung it up in the greenhouse to dry as there isn’t enough time between showers in the garden. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2026.

I’ve never seen a garlic plant before, and this is my first time seeing one freshly harvested. I’m also impressed by how the plant was braided to hang like that. After harvesting, you air-dry it before using it?

Garlic grows as a bulb with long leaves almost like grass. It needs to be dried after harvesting especially when it has come out of wet ground otherwise it will go mouldy.

I usually use garlic powder in my cooking but Pretty did traipse in with three jumbo garlic heads a couple of weeks ago. She said she was going to cook something that needed several fresh cloves. (I'll have to break the cloves down when she's ready for them, just like I cut up fresh onions for her.)
