Three more days until Sir Paul’s birthday! I’m celebrating with a month of his music. Today is one I had to leave off the top ten, darn it all. This was the biggest single of any ex-Beatle’s career. Understandable, because it’s a gem. Here’s today’s song. Mull of Kintyre (Wings) Because NOTHING says rock and roll like a bagpipe band marching down the seashore! Paul owns a farm near the Mull of Kintyre, so needless to say he’d have a soft spot for it. He put that in song, and apparently everyone else had a soft spot for it, too. It became the first single to ever sell more than two million copies, and it was the biggest non-charity hit of the 20th century. And if you’re in America, you’re probably going, “never heard it.” Nope. Over here, the record company and radio stations plugged the other side of the record, the rockin’ “Girls School.” All told, it’s a great little 45, with a song for either mood. This side, though, is simply beautiful. Mull of Kintyre Written by Paul McCartney and Denny Laine Released as a single (Wings), 1977 The sunset’s on fire:

Dang, PM sounds really bad in that one, no wonder it didn't play here.

That really is one of those songs that feels almost cinematic rather than just a single ??

Really? This is the biggest seller of the four solo singles? Surprising in that they all did have some pretty legitimately big hits that got lots of radio play here. Interesting. You really do learn something new everyday. (Off the top of my head, I would've thought "Imagine" might've been the one. I would've been way off!) (Or did I totally misread all of that? That's what made sense to my weed-addled brain. )
