Remember earlier in the countdown when I used a song (“Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You”) that left Ringo out of mentioning the Beatles? I said not to worry because Ringo would get the spotlight on his own eventually. And here we are with today’s song! Spotlight on Ringo (whose birthday is coming up in early July)! Ringo Beat - Ella Fitzgerald Truth be told, I don’t know if you can find a weirder combination. The First Lady of jazz singing about the Beatles? What’s more than that, this is one of the few novelty songs of the era that’s taking a positive look at the Beatles. Ella Fitzgerald wrote this to celebrate “the younger generation,” reminding people that the youngsters in the jazz era went crazy “when [Gene] Krupa was the drummer boy.” It’s definitely not what you expected the “older generation” of musicians to say about the newcomers. There were (and still are) a lot of people who consider this song one of the worst and weakest pieces in Fitzgerald’s discography. Bah humbug. It’s fun. Oh, a post-script: Ella sang “A Hard Day’s Night” on her Ella in Hamburg album! That is a really good song. I've seen her on variety shows back in the late 60s but she didn't sing this
