I don’t really like swimming pools - they are just big Petri dishes that grow other people’s bacteria and fungi. The sea around where I live has frequent e-coli warnings due to the poo of others. But I want to swim. So I took out swimming membership at our local pool which has also squash courts, gym and all the usual. It wax going to be £21 a month which is far too much but I noticed a better deal for people who passed their 65th birthday - £11.90 for a YEAR! The catch is that it’s not for weekends which I wouldn’t want anyway - splashy, unruly children, and during the week it’s only for non peak times. This is ideal for me. But let’s return to the cost. How on earth was the figure of £11.90 arrived at? £12 I could understand and accept, but £11.90 for a whole year? Some geek must have been employed to calculate that using some bizarre formula.

I likes swimming a lot but I prefer the beach and fortunately, we have amazing beaches here that are clean. I'm very choosy with the pool I swim in. I don't usually use public pools.

I LOVE swimming but there are no public pools that are open anymore. They all closed during the pandemic and the city claims it's too expensive to open them anymore. Pretty and I used to go to the lake or river to swim but I don't drive that far anymore. Usually, I can't see well enough to drive and, when I can see to drive, I worry about my eyes swelling shut so we can't get home again. (Pretty doesn't drive. I taught her but she hated it and refused to get a license.)

I used to go swimming every day until l had my stroke.. Last year there was a fantastic pool in our hotel in Tenerife. I went in for a swim which was adults only & ended up laughng my head off because l have some risidual weakness on my left side it means l only swim in circles. Which is a bit disappointing but at least it pleased me going in to the pool. Next year we have rented two villas in Mauritius each with its own pool. My daughter & the grandkids are in the 4 bed villa & my wife & I are in the 2 bed villa next door. I will enjoy being able to get in the pool every day! Enjoy your discounted swimming time.

@garymarsh7 The problem with my early swim is that that’s when all the other pensioners go, and all they do is get into the pool and stand along the edge chatting so that pensioners like me can’t do lengths. They’re all men and when they get out after getting wet and chatting they clutter up the changing room and go home to tell the wife they’d been for a swim. Liars!

@xFiacre I never chatted to anyone there. I would go in swim a few laps then out again. There would be a few people who would acknowledge me with a polite nod & I would nod back but I was there for a swim not for socialising. I just checked the prices for our area 65+ £440 for a year or £44 per month! Ridiculous. I think l should move to Ireland!

I wouldn't worry about it, just make the most of the 'extra' 10p!

Just now
That sounds the ideal deal, so to speak. The price does seem strange.

Aye It is a strange amount Surely £11 would have been more sensible I think we are lucky , the sea here is allegedly safe to swim in
