Mother-In-Law Is Having a "Crisis" This Morning

The mother-in-law who has Alzheimer's and lives in a care home called us about 10 am today. The first thing she said was that the mini-fridge in her room had "blown up." After some questions and answers we realized that it was the plug outlet that may or may not have "blown up". Mother-in-law says the outlet blew up and spit the plug/cord out across the room. I've never known that to happen. So we called maintenance and they're supposed to be looking into it. If the outlet did get fried somehow, there's a good chance it killed the mini-fridge too. We also called hubby's brother, who is much handier than hubby and knows how to do and fix everything and he's going to stop in to see MIL today to check on her and see what's going on with the plug and determine exactly did or didn't happen. Of course MIL is saying, "I don't want to live at this place! Look what happened!" I always post a pink photo with posts about the MIL because her favorite color is pink. UPDATE 12:45 pm Brother in law went and nothing was wrong with either the plug or the mini-fridge. Now MIL says she unplugged it and turned it off. We don't know what really caused her to say these things about an "explosion" this morning. Did see hear or see thunder or lightning in the middle of the night and get confused? We don't know.

Sounds like a whole lot of ado about nothing as Shakespeare would say, I do not envy you with what else is ahead, What does she keep in the mini fridge?

I hope your brother-in-law can fix the fridge if that’s the problem.

Poor thing, she may have dreamed it...or hallucinated it.

Well, we didn’t have any thunderstorms last night. It may have been a dream. Has she had any additional counseling or therapy with specialists?

They often imagine things. Dad for some reason got worried about his wall heater setting the house on fire. They had used those for many years so I don't know what caused him to suddenly think that

Years ago, at our last house, I saw/heard an outlet in my bedroom spit a plug and fire out across my bedroom. Lightning had hit the roof and came in through the wiring and blew the outlet up. (Pretty heard the explosion, I yelled because it startled me and she screamed asking if I was okay. I was just falling asleep at the time.) I checked the breaker and it was also black and smoking but had tripped. IF that had happened with your MIL, I can guarantee you could see the damage before you reached the outlet. The one in my bedroom blew the outlet cover off along with the cord and left the outlet itself black and smoking.

Many Dementia/Alzheimer's patients often unplug anything and everything they can access. I went to a Memory Care home once to visit a friend's mother. They had clear hard plastic covers, kind of like a bubble over the outlet, in place, which were screwed in very firmly. My friend asked about this, and was told they did it to all the outlets as the residents couldn't seem to leave the plugs alone, that they always unplugged everything. I just read the update, and I am not surprised that she unplugged it herself. Well, we know it didn't blow across the room...as for living there, of course she really doesn't have a choice. And sometimes she likes it, sometimes she doesn't...it's so hard, I'm sorry.
