James Paul McCartney, OBE, CH. One of the most universally recognized musicians in history. He just turned 84, and I’ve been celebrating all month. Now it’s top ten time, and let’s go into the top ten. #10: The End of the End (Paul) Many people joke around about writing their own epitaphs. One of my favorites is the 109-year-old hypochondriac who wanted on his headstone, “I TOLD YOU that I was sick!” This song is nearly 20 years old, but here you see that Sir Paul not only wrote his epitaph but planned his funeral ceremony as well! Yes, it’s a sad song, but it’s not really. Paul is looking optimistically at everything: “it’s the start of a journey to a much better place, and this wasn’t bad, so a much better place would have to be special.” He’s echoing the line from Jimmy Buffett’s “He Went to Paris” (“some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way”) with that sentiment. Many people these days don’t call them “funerals” but rather “celebration of life” ceremonies. That’s exactly what Paul’s advocating in this song. Oh, and please don’t miss the Abbey Road reference with the title: the last song in the side two medley is “The End.” The End of the End Written by Paul McCartney From Memory Almost Full (Paul), 2007 No need to be sad:

I always wanted to put "I have had better days" on mine.

I love Merv Griffin’s: “I will not be back after this message.”

@teamfreak16 -- yep, no kidding! Jack Lemmon's is also funny: it says "Jack Lemmon in," and it's blank after that And Rodney Dangerfield's says, "There goes the neighborhood."

Paul is definitely nearer The End than he was 20 years ago, when he was 64 (Isn’t that one of his songs too? ) I don’t know about the 109 year old, but I do know that Spike Milligan (one of The Goons) has an epitaph on his gravestone that is written in Gaelic, but in English is “I told you I was ill”

It’s a great epitaph. Written in Gaelic it’s probably funnier, with people who don’t understand the language thinking it’s something profound or philosophical or religious…then discovering the truth.

I hadn't heard this before. It's optimistic I think, as you said.

Yes, I don’t see any sadness in it at all.

Another one I don't know. I guess I didn't follow Paul very much when he went solo.

I agree 100%!! There's an old hymn that says "Brighten the Corner Where You Are," and that's what we should be doing!
