I've decided to enjoy it!

Many times I have heard or read people saying that childhood memories are always filled with long, hot summer days, and those days never seem to happen any more. Well they’re happening now, but attitudes have changed – we now have a ‘red warning’ of extreme heat. On Monday I needed to go and collect something from Freegle (for what it’s worth, an unwanted bag to hold earphones. Big One got earphones for her birthday and was a bit put out that they just came in a box with no handy bag to transport them in, so this was perfect!) I looked at the sunshine and listened to the weather warnings and wondered if a short cycle ride of 4 or 5 miles each way was too risky. Should I postpone the trip? Say sorry I couldn’t come until I had a car available? I didn’t want to mess the person around after they had offered the item to me. I went outside and it didn’t seem that bad. I decided I would set out and if it really was too hot I would have to turn back. But it wasn’t too hot, it was lovely! A perfect day for a bike ride. It reminded me of being a teenager. On hot summer days we would have been out for walks or bike rides or horse rides, or just sitting around under trees chatting and making daisy chains, enjoying the summer. Now we are constantly being warned about sun, or heat, or cold, or wind, or rain… I understand that extreme weather can be dangerous but it makes life very stressful and instead of enjoying things we are constantly fearful. I know climate change is really happening and we need to do something if we are to continue life as we know it. But at the same time I am going to enjoy the long hot days of summer All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2026.

It’s too hot for me! I don’t ride a bike, and waiting for the aircon to kick-in in the car is unbearable. Roll on the cooler temperatures and rain they are promising for next week.

Maybe fly spray, and a change of clothes at the end of the journey?

@Orson_Kart Sunglasses keep the flies out of my eyes - not that there are many these days. I have also found that mirror-lensed sunglasses have the added advantage of causing dilly-dallying pedestrians to jump out of my way more quickly!

I take a medication that warns users not to spend prolonged time in the sunlight. But, on a pretty day when the heat isn’t getting to me (Oklahoma is HOT), I will take Sadie on longer walks she just loves. Your bike ride sounds lovely.

I enjoy the warmer days. If we spend time in them like we did as kids they are still enjoyable

There are ways to enjoy summer without putting yourself at risk. We enjoy the summer days when we don't have things to do. Usually what we have to do though mixed with summer tries to kill us lol. Usually it's training or yard work. This weekend is training but the plus side to that is we won't be in full gear lol. Glad you enjoyed your bike ride and can enjoy more days like that

You are right, doing hard physical work would not be a good situation. What sort of training are you referring to?

@JordanLader Oh yes you have told me before. I really wouldn't want to be running about in all that protective gear!

Climate change is sneaking up on us and we need to do something about it. The extreme heat we are experiencing here is at an all time high

@Wrexxo So you're having unusual weather too? We hear a lot about what's happening in the UK of course (especially southern England) and a bit about other European countries but not much about anywhere else unless a major disaster occurs.

Even in the hot weather, there are activities that we can do, like you said, we can turn around and return home should we feel too hot. I think that alot of the warnings pertain to properly keeping ourselves hydrated and slowing down when working outside in the heat, taking extra breaks and things like that, and of course staying covered from the sun's rays. When Mother Nature gives us heat, we need to adjust and enjoy.
