No shopping or Turkey baguettes today ………

Here in the UK most of the country is on a red heat warning …..and I can confirm , I am melting. Last night was apparently the hottest night of the year so far. I had to come downstairs as I was getting no sleep at all, and take the fan back upstairs with me to cool myself and the room. It worked a treat I’m pleased to say. Anyway, usually on a Thursday morning I meet Mom and we go shopping, then I have a Turkey baguette for lunch. This week the weather is really taking its toll with Mom…..at 88 and with severe Asthma it’s not a great time for her. She decided not to go shopping. The Mister and I will get her shopping at the weekend. I would much rather she stays at home when she is feeling as she does at the moment. Anyway …… how are you all , and what are you up to today ?

I read that only 20% of European homes have air conditioning. Is that true? I grew up without a/c but have had it since age 21. I don't think I could endure the extreme heat of Summer here without it.

Homes in the UK don’t usually have air conditioning ……we have something called “ open the window “…. Our weather here is such that we don’t really need AC. They have it in shops and big offices but that’s it ….even schools don’t have it ……it’s just not usually necessary. The weather we are experiencing at the moment is very rare ……I guess that’s why we are not coping with it very well. As for 20% of homes …..here I would say the ‘posh’ houses of a £million or more might have it ….certainly no regular home would.

@Traceyjayne It’s too hot to open the windows during the day. I opened my bedroom window wide when I went to bed last night. It did eventually cool down, but the noise that I don’t normally hear was disturbing, and of course it gets light early, plus the dawn chorus. Result - very little sleep.

I’m glad she’s not trying to tough it out in this weather. I’m sorry you don’t get your turkey baguette though!

We don’t have the red warning here in the North-east. The temperature has been in the high 20’s today. It’s too hot for me, so I haven’t been out either. I went outside briefly early this morning to water my plants that are in pots and it was about 20C then. Slept badly last night because of the heat, so I fell asleep in front of a nice cooling fan this afternoon. Bliss I don’t envy those further south where it is in the 30’s. I saw on the news that the record temperature for June was broken for the 2nd day in a row. 36.7C. That’s too darn hot. Sweltering!

@Traceyjayne I try to avoid watering at night as it attracts the slugs and snails. However, I’m not sure whether they are surviving in this heat to be worried about. What’s the thriller on tv? I’m just waiting for the football to come on.

@Orson_Kart The thriller is called Suspect. I’m streaming it on 4. I’m on episode 4 at the moment. Which match are you waiting for ?

I do my watering later , in the evening …..I don’t get up early enough to do it in the morning. I am sitting here watching a new thriller on tv ……and I have the fan on beside me. It’s lovely.

Your mom is smart to stay home with such excessive heat. Certainly sounds like you're dealing with very hot weather there. Today is a very exciting day for me. I'm doing laundry
