Happy World Beatles Day!! Yeah, yeah, yeah! Did you know there was such a thing? I truthfully didn’t when I planned this celebration of Sir Paul McCartney’s 84th birthday. It’s a pretty good day to pick, though: halfway between Paul’s birthday and Ringo’s (which is July 7). I’ll celebrate, by accident (as I said, I didn’t plan any of this), with a Beatles song as I celebrate my favorites from Sir Paul.
#6: Golden Slumbers (Beatles)
Watch this clip, from Royal Albert Hall in 1997, and ask yourself: could they get any more southpaws on stage??
You have Sir Paul, Mark Knopfler, and Phil Collins representing the left-handed world. Sting is also a lefty and was at the concert, but I don’t see any close-ups of him on stage during this song.
Okay, these songs. While I’m including the full medley, let it be known that the song that puts it on the list is “Golden Slumbers.” Everything after that is filler to me. Yeah, some pretty heavy-duty filler, but the STAR of the medley is “Golden Slumbers.”
I have to call out Ringo’s drum solo (played in the video below by Collins, who appeared to be sweating bullets to try to match it). It’s the only drum solo he ever had with the Beatles. And it’s marvelous.
The medley ends with a simple line from McCartney that may be one of the most-quoted lines from any Beatles song: “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”
Okay, you got me. The whole medley is great.

Part of the “Golden Slumbers medley” (with “Carry That Weight” and “The End”) (all written by McCartney)

I like the whole medley. I really like the way they did "Golden Slumbers" in Across The Universe.

@FourWalls oh, you should! I really liked that one, and also Yesterday, which was really remarkable.

If you’ve heard him try to squeak out old Beatles tunes, or even Wings songs, saying “his voice isn’t as good anymore” is totally incorrect. His voice is NON-EXISTENT now.
It was positively painful to see a clip of the old Paul screeching “Let It Be.” I thought he sounded great on “Hello Goodbye” on the last Colbert show, then I realized that Elvis Costello was singing unison with him to strengthen the sound.

You've got a good point @FourWalls Some people like Sinatra or Martin can sing perdy good most of their adult lives but some like Paul just plain can't. Makes me wonder if Jagger has the same problem but I don't like his music. Come to think of it almost any of the singers I liked as a young adult are way older than I and either passed already or gave up trying to sing. Some should simply retire.

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”
That's what closed out nightly midnight station ID. I played it every night!

Now that’s cool.
Also might explain why you don’t like the Beatles.

@FourWalls - It was long before that. They do have a few songs I like.

I didn’t know it, either. All we need is love!
