Most of the problems city authorities have on the fourth are due to illegal fireworks. They are illegal for a reason. Yet they are still being sold. Why make them illegal if they can still be sold? Legislators need to change this. Think about writing or calling your local representatives.

The illegal ones are bad because they can injure people.

I don't take issue with people buying some of the smaller fireworks, but the big ones are extremely dangerous, especially in places where there are a lof of houses. They're not illegal in Ohio, just in some cities. Where we are, they are legal. You can only shoot them off during certain times, though. We buy some of the smaller ones that won't set people's houses on fire, like the little smoke bombs, and some of the ones that spark in the driveway but won't go anywhere. We have always tried to be mindful of the neighbors and only set them off during the 4th of July weekend when everyone else is already setting them off. My sister has a house out in the country, and they set off a bunch one year. Those were the bigger ones, and they had permission to set them off and took all of the precautions. I think it really depends on several factors. How close you are to people's houses, if you actually know what you're doing, and the kind you set off. We have always tried to be mindful of other people.

@celticeagle I don't mind when other people do it as long as it's done responsibly, and it's not directly near other houses, and they aren't doing it more than on special holidays. If it's just the 4th, let them have their fun as long as they are doing it safely and it's not in an illegal area. I personally just try to make sure we are safe. I wouldn't be pleased if my neighbors were setting off the big ones next to us, with our houses not being super far from theirs. People need to learn to be mindful of their neighbors.

Close proximity to other houses is rather scary. A lot of times unless something major happens no one seems to care.

That's not going to do any good, because the fireworks themselves aren't illigal, how they used is. Do you not remember prohibition? Have you learned nothing from that? You can't take something away, because it'd only keep honest people honest.
