I went to the cinema today. Not really a newsworthy event, but I haven’t been for quite some time because the films shown nowadays in cinemas are generally just not worth watching - all special effects, improbable sex and stupid story lines.
We saw A Private Life. Jodie Foster stars and speaks really good French - yes, it’s in French. She plays an American who’s lived in France for years and talks in French the whole time except when expletivising under pressure, and then she swears fluently in very picturesque American.
It’s a really satisfying and gripping film and was playing in an art house cinema in Belfast which unfortunately went mainstream years ago so I stopped attending. Used to be that all the films they ran were subtitled, not so much now.
We got in for nothing because we had a voucher as a Father’s Day gift from one of my daughters. My wife got in for free because she is our disabled daughter’s companion, and we used our grumpy old persons passes for the train. A really cheap day out, and I enjoyed it.
It was strange being up in Belfast again. We went to a cafe beside the cinema and the coffee was as awful as it was ten years ago. Hot bilge, and I couldn’t drink it. Manchester tomorrow and the hot beverage’s had better be good.
Does the cinema do it for you? Do you like foreign language films? Does coffee in your town look like sewage?

I will answer your questions as best as I can
Does the cinema do it for you? No it doesn't, haven't been to one in 25 years
Do you like foreign language films? Yes I do. Reading the subtitles is a joy.
Does coffee in your town look like sewage?
Well No, it looks like brown water
Now I see you said something about grumpy old persons passes for the train?
Wonder if we Scots get passes like that?

@ineeddentures I think you do but I don’t know how grumpy you need to be to avail of it. We get free bus and train in NI from age 60. At 66 we get free transport here and in the Republic.

We got bus passes when we were 60.
Never heard anyone mention one for the train and most of our neighbours are as old, or older than we are.
I must check online and see
I would be grumpy about sewerage like coffee

The best foreign language movie I ever saw was Pan’s Labyrinth. It was nominated for Oscars, and that usually makes me think it’s definitely a movie I won’t like. However, I watched that one, and while I ended up sobbing, I also felt uplifted. It was an incredible movie.
I usually go to a movie twice a year. I’m more for comedies or action movies, but I don’t like excess blood and gore. So the good action movie is sometimes hard to find. Not your cup of tea, I know.
I’m so glad you go to enjoy the movie. I imagine it’s difficult to truly entertain your jaded soul.

Jodie is a good actress. We haven't been to a theater in years. Too expensive here.
I think the French language is one of the prettiest languages to listen to.

We haven't been to a theater in years. I always enjoyed watching the films made for kids and people stare at you (and talk about you) if you watch those movies without kids.

The last time we went to the cinema was about 2 years ago, we saw a film about the group Led Zeppelin. That’s The Misters favourite group and lead singer Robert Plant is my Dads cousin,
I’m not a great fan of subtitles ….i remember you saying your daughter was ace at that …
Coffee here is generally lovely.
Have a great time in Manchester ….

I like to see either sport related films or movies like the Planet Of The Apes series.
