Mother-In-Law Has Accused My Husband of Stealing Her Earrings

It's a documented fact that people with dementia often think people are stealing from them. Many times their "missing" items are just missplaced, sometimes the person with dementia has hidden the items, or sometimes they're remembering something they had in the past that they no longer have. About a month ago a friend of my mother-in-law's visited her and gave her a pair of pink rhinestone heart-shaped earrings. My husband (MIL's oldest son of two sons) visited her on Wednesday and she says her earrings went missing on Wednesday. She more or less accused her son of taking her earrings. When we offered to help come look for them in her room she got agitated and said, "I'm not as crazy as everybody thinks I am. I've looked everywhere and they're not here. Somebody's stolen them!" Oh this really gets old and there's no way to explain to her that her things haven't been stolen. It falls on deaf ears in a brain that can't comprehend what's going on. And so it goes. ***Now that the photo feature is working again, I've added a pink image because mother in law's favorite color is pink.

It requires a whole lot of patience, and gritting the teeth.

Such accusations are hard to take but are never going to end. It's just so, so sad.

The key is patience. There is not much you can do. Since you understand her situation, you just gotta flow with it
