I Was There - Gary Numan

I’m not sure if I’m in the middle of an all-nighter yet - it’s not even midnight here. But I took a hard, zonked-out nap earlier, so it might be the case. Soooooo, what the heck, I just found another video from a show that I was actually at. In this case, it was Gary Numan at the Gothic Theater in the Denver suburb of Englewood, Colorado, 09/09/2022.
London-born Gary Numan (Gary Anthony James Webb) is an electronic music pioneer best-known for his 1979 #1 (in both the U.S. and U.K.) hit, “Cars,” as well as his robotic, androgynous appearance. His other #1 hit, in the U.K., was as frontman for his former band, Tubeway Army - “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” His career is now entering its 5th decade (not too bad for a guy that said that he had thought he wouldn’t be around long, career-wise.)
Whereas Numan’s music was very icy and robotic (catchy, though. Remember “Cars?,”) the artist has embraced the industrial side of electronic music, bringing that genre’s edginess into his performances and new material. This gives cold songs such as “Metal,” and “Films” an entire new feel. He’s still singing about robots wondering what it’s like to be human, but it’s different, yet still entirely recognizable.
Although I never got to see Numan back in the day, this somehow still felt different, as if I had seen him in the glory days. I had seen videos of “new” Gary, including performing with Nine Inch Nails, but this was my first time seeing him, so it felt fresh and new to me. Old songs given new life, so to speak.
I’m totally glad I went.
Link is to Numan performing “Pure” (9th song of the set.) My vantage point was nowhere near the front, so I am not in this one:

Hit-wise, he's probably done. But he draws good crowds still when he plays.

@Ronrybs - You'll still hear "Cars" on the radio here. That's it, though.

Yeah, that’s definitely a different side of Gary Numan than I’d think of from the late 70s/early 80s

A hell of a lot different than when I saw him on Saturday Night Live, that's for sure!

@teamfreak16 Well, I do think your taste in music may not be everyone's but there's nothing wrong with that.

I figure most of the stuff I post is not anyone's scene.

Always liked that song. Cars. I've tried to listen to other Gary Numan stuff and it's a bit rougher on the ears. But yes, he's had quite the career nonetheless.
Funny, no joke, just yesterday I saw a car with a bumper sticker that had a Gary Numan image on it that simply read, "Gary Numan is here in my car." Funny because I saw that bumper sticker, hadn't thought of Gary Numan or the song Cars in literally years, and then your post pops up.

That's actually a funny bumper sticker. I would have never thought of something like that. Very creative.
