My sister's second wedding

I've been watching some Hallmark movies lately, they're terrible, and I'm more than aware they are all super predictable, with most of them having the same storyline with different actors, but for some weird reason with the month I have had it just takes my brain off of all of the crappy stuff and I can kind of smile along with it, that said it also gives me some wedding flashbacks of my sister's wedding where I was pressured into being a bridesmaid, something I wanted no part of, but she asked and I didn't feel like I could turn her down. My sister was the one who thought I was going to regret not having a big wedding, or a wedding at all since I got married by a judge at the courthouse. She was always a big wedding and celebration person. She was married twice. I was a flower girl in the first wedding because I was five. At the second wedding, I was 20 and a bridesmaid. All of my siblings were in her wedding. She paired us up to walk down the aisle, but my oldest brother gave her away, if I remember correctly. That whole wedding was a lot. She had a somewhat large wedding party to incorporate the whole family into it. She made all of the bridesmaid dresses. I hate dresses, and I especially hate dress shoes. I tolerated it all for her. I even went with her to meet the preacher. She didn't want to go by herself, and no one else was able to go, so I got roped into it. I will never forget the rehearsal. The preacher kept going, and we were all getting tired of standing, and my sister's now husband's brother pulled out a pair of light-up glasses and put them on, and we all had to try and keep ourselves from laughing. It was a funny moment in an otherwise dull night. My sister has a good sense of humor, so she wasn't upset. I don't think the preacher even noticed. I have never met any preacher who talked for that long. The wedding itself went ok, but the reception is where I have the most flashbacks. My best friend came to the wedding with me to keep me company, but I couldn't sit with him the whole time because I had to sit with the wedding party for the first part. My niece (who is only 4 years younger than me) then forced me to go up for the throwing of the bouquet. I wanted no part of this and was literally dragged to the front. No one caught it the first time because no one wanted it. The second time, my niece ran and intercepted it, shoved it in my arms, and took off. Everyone seemed to miss the part where SHE caught it. If they knew me at all, they would know I would never catch it. They just saw me with it shoved in my hands and said it was me. My sister's stepdaughter's boyfriend caught the garter. That was an incredibly awkward experience where he had to put the garter on my leg. I found my niece later and beat her with the bouquet. Later that night, my niece and best friend managed to get me on the stage, where we sang some Queen. My sister managed to record that because they were shocked I went up; I was shocked I went up, but I did. I also was forced to dance with my brother because they had a dance where the wedding party had to dance together, which was awkward. I would love to say it was a fun night, but mostly it was awkward and reminded me of why I hated weddings. I don't even talk to my niece anymore, not because of that night, but because she went to college and got a degree, and I think she somehow thinks that makes her better, and she got very snobby. She is now the head of the food service department for our city schools, which means I actually do see her at my work sometimes, but we never say a word to each other. One of the ladies in the cafeteria told me that she is very stuck up, and I had to agree. Most of the cafeteria staff doesn't like her. I told them that she didn't use to be this way. The weird wedding flashbacks have been hitting me a lot lately, and I'm not sure if it's from all of the Hallmark movies or because I'm remembering a time when my whole family got along and actually talked to each other. The closer it gets to my 9th wedding anniversary, the more I'm reminded why I'm glad we didn't have a big wedding. I have never enjoyed going to them, and I definitely didn't want to have my own. It was never about the wedding for me; it was always about the marriage. The getting married part is what I had to get out of the way to have the marriage.

I used to watch Hallmark alot. Got so tired of it. I have only been to one fancy wedding in my life. I haven't had one. Just justice of the peace.

I've only been to one really fancy wedding, but I've been to a lot of weddings as a whole. When you have a big family, it seems someone is always getting married. When I was younger, I was forced to go to most weddings; as an adult, I've only gone to the ones of our siblings or very close friends. My best friend's wedding was the best wedding I've ever been to, and the only wedding I've ever enjoyed. He had his wedding at the zoo, and we got to spend time walking around, and it was such a low-key event. It just felt like a gathering. My husband's brother's wedding was so fancy, and the food was too fancy, and I didn't care for most of it. They had the wedding at a hotel, and it was huge, and we had to sit at a special table. At my best friend's wedding, you just sat wherever you wanted; that was most of the other weddings I'd been to. They put up a bunch of tables, and you sat wherever, but at my husband's brother's wedding there were seating arrangements; it was just over the top for me.

@sissy15 ..........that's a lot of weddings. Just seems silly for just the one day. I think I'd rather spend that money on a cool honeymoon.

We all have to get over things to be there for our loved ones. I didn’t want to do the stuff I did for my sister’s wedding, but I wasn’t so selfish that I didn’t realize it’s not about me. Her wedding was July 15th in Oklahoma, and the air conditioning in the church was broken. It was terrible.

Very true, I spent a whole day of my life that I basically hated in order to make my sister happy, and I'd do it again. I don't miss the day, but I do miss when my family all got along, and that was one of the last big events we were all at and talking to each other. We got together for my mom's 80th birthday last year for my mom, but we all separated ourselves. My sister got married on July 7th. She got married on 7/7/07. She wanted her wedding to be on God's day, as she said. 10 years and a little less than a month later I married my husband. I got married in August. Summer weddings are super popular, but man, they are hot. I remember how warm the reception hall got at my sister's wedding and needing to step out and get some fresh air. I also brought some slippers to wear at the reception so my feet wouldn't kill me. I wore the shoes for the wedding part and for pictures, but the second that was all over, I put comfortable shoes on. My sister made all of our dresses so we wouldn't have to pay for them; otherwise, I wouldn't have done it, because I couldn't afford to buy or rent my dress, and she knew that. She got some free material and made all of our dresses. She also provided my shoes; she is really good at finding deals. She at least knew she was asking a lot, so she tried to make it as easy for us as possible, so I am incredibly grateful for that. She still has the dress I wore at her first wedding for some reason. I never understood why she bought and kept it. She didn't buy or keep any of the other tuxes or dresses from that wedding, but kept the dress I wore.

I am sorry about your niece, I hope you can get along again somehow soon. I missed a lot of my cousins with the same problem, because most of them are well-off, they thought of the others who did not make it like them a cast out... lol! But that's okay, I still love them and keep the memories. And whenever we have an opportunity for a get-together I go, one that they don't out cast us, lol! But I took those opportunity just to meet them, I just love them nd pray for them. Anyway, everyone has different personality, one love to be with people and one would love to be private in celebrating important seasons of their lives. I also want everything to be intimate and private. Lol! If I get married someday I would love it to be private with immediate families... I don't know how... since we literally have a big family. Lol!

I appreciate that, but I really don't want to have my niece back in my life. It's not that I hate her or anything, but I find peace in letting go of the past, at least except for the memories. I still smile when I think of them, and I no longer hold anger or resentment. I now know it's just how it was, and people change. I typically don't go to get-togethers; it's too awkward for me. I don't like being in a room where people look down on me, so I choose not to go for my own mental health and sanity. I wish everyone well, but I'm not going to make things harder for myself by going. I've been choosing myself in situations like this lately. I never used to, but I'm at an age where I no longer want to salvage anything and just accept things as they are. I don't hate anyone, and I genuinely do care about what happens to them, but I'm ok with not talking to them. My family is also large. I grew up with a lot of siblings, and both of my parents have a lot of siblings, and most of them had a bunch of kids. I just decided I didn't want a bunch of people there and decided that what I wanted mattered more than what they wanted. I did invite my oldest sister because I remember her telling me she'd never forgive me if she didn't get to come, so I sighed and invited her. It hurt the feelings of one of my other sisters, and I am sorry about that, but I just didn't want everyone there. I didn't want to sacrifice everything I wanted to make everyone else happy. It wasn't about them; it was about me, and while I am not usually selfish, I realized that was exactly my problem. I always worried way too much about what everyone else wanted while dismissing my own thoughts and feelings, and now I'm trying to worry less about them and do what I need for my own peace and happiness.

I've seen a few very ordinary Hallmark films lately. They can certainly be predictable.

Yeah, I definitely don't watch them because they have a good plot line. I can almost always predict how the movie will go. I think I watch them because they're more feel-good and mind-numbing.
