Bad news about the pigeons

I wrote recently about the pigeon nesting in our grapevine. It seemed to be in the ideal spot because even though we were coming and going directly beneath, what was going on in the nest was practically invisible, and even from above nothing could be seen, at least not from our bedroom window as the nest was hidden by leaves. A couple of day ago we realised that the eggs must have hatched because fragments of shell were found on the ground, and yesterday I could just about see a frill of white fluff peeping out from beneath Mrs Pigeon’s feathers. But when I went outside this morning to see what I could see, all that was visible in the vine was the twiggy nest with light coming through it, and when I looked down there were blood splatters on the table below. So things didn’t end well for the pigeon family either. I wonder who was responsible for this? It must have happened during the night or this morning but I didn’t hear anything and our open bedroom window is quite near. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2026.
