So today we sallied forth by train to the big smoke to go to see a film in a cinema. I dislike cinemas with their smells, overpriced drinks and weird characters lurking about. This one I go to is a private art house cinema and the adjective weird just doesn’t cover some of the oddballs that lurk here. I’ll tell you some time. Anyway the train ride was great, especially since it’s free to those over 60 so we just had to pay for our daughter. Cinema was cheaper too since although our disabled daughter had to pay my wife gets in free as her companion. The auditorium was empty except for us and 12 other people and the film was gloomy. Japanese anime. Angel’s Egg. A sort of post apocalyptic search for truth and redemption but maybe not as precise as that. All very existential and my sort of thing but as I find cinemas uncomfortable and depressing and you don’t know if the person sitting behind you is an axe murderer or not I found it hard to settle. I fell asleep a few times - stale, warm air. One time when I woke there was something about Noah’s ark, another time I found myself in Nazi occupied Paris in the 1940s. I’m sure had I stayed awake it would have made sense but I didn’t and now I’m feeling all post apocalyptic myself. On the train going home my wife met a friend and they talked non-stop for the one hour journey. They talked constantly about absolutely nothing, and although they spoke much they said nothing. Fortunately the scenery was nice. Have you seen any bizarre films in a cinema lately? TV doesn’t count.
