Let me tell you, these past two months when I’ve been using lyrics to just focusing on the titles has been great! It’s also more challenging, because I have to remember all these songs.
It’s opening the floodgates for more selections, though.
Anyway, pack your bags, we’re off to Nawlins. That’s how some people in Louisiana pronounce New Orleans. The Big Easy. Mardi Gras central. Here’s a fun fact: Mobile, Alabama claims the actual first Mardi Gras celebration in America.
As usual, there’s a lot of mixes in the list: country, rock, R&B, and a jazz tune or two. And, if you know me, no real surprises.
Here’s the teaser, to show you how diverse the month is going to run. The all-American Indian band Redbone, with their FM rock hit “Witch Queen of New Orleans.”

This doesn't ring a bell for me. I have, however, read a lot about the Marie person that is the subject of the song!

There was a song about her that was a #1 hit for Bobby Bare, but he didn’t mention New Orleans in the song…or else it’d be on the list (and in the top ten)!

If you've never read her story, you will be shocked at some of the things she did. Oh, and she had more than one daughter named Marie--one who supposedly took her place but didn't ever achieve her mother's notoriety.

Since only one song is coming to mind, I'll have to see what I know and forgot about!

You talk like someone who’s never walked the French Quarter at 2 AM….

@FourWalls - I've never been there. But I do remember another song now. So that's two.

The band was from L.A., just singing about New Orleans. Their biggest hit was “Come and Get Your Love.”

If you hear anything from Redbone anymore, it’s “Come and Get Your Love.”

The spoken introduction Bobby Bare gave to his song was, “The most famous of all the voodoo queens that ever existed is Marie Laveau, down in Louisiana.” It’s true. I think most people know her name (or reputation) even without even studying much history of New Orleans.

I live in Louisville, Kentucky, and there’s a million ways to pronounce Louisville. Same with New Orleans. Some pronounce it with three syllables (New Or-LEANS), some pronounce it with four syllables (New Or-le-ANNS), and then there’s the southern way, Nawlins.
