It's Monday

It's Monday and it didn't start off on a cheerful note here. I went out to feed the chickens and found Dotty floating in the water bucket. I am heartbroken, and have started making plans for next year when the hens go broody. I will turn the small and original coop back into a single unit. It will be broody hens with eggs/chicks only. All water buckets will be removed and lower/shallow containers used. Or put the hanging water contraption back up where they have to peck for water. I also had another egg hatch where the chicks yolk sack was not fully developed. So no more baby chicks. This has been happening every day with loss of newly hatched chicks. A couple have hatched out okay but found dead in the morning when I go out. I don't know if hen is attacking them and not wanting to take care of more than one chick, if trampled, or what. So the day has started out on a sad note. How is your Monday going so far? Photo Credit: Public Domain: Flowers for Dotty

So sorry. She sounds like she was a favorite. I have a hen setting now. I got tired of arguing with her

I guess it being her first time broody and first chick, she was smitten with the little one or thought..oh Bell NO! I don't want another one following me around and having to feed. I still have two sitting. The second nest has 2 or maybe even 3 hens taking turns sitting. Dizzy hens!!! Just like the co-parenting on the 1st next. Crazy girls!!

Yes, bad start but I felt better getting out and away from the house with hubby's eye appointment. Hopefully, next cluck will be better and she will be more experienced.

I thought for sure she was going to make it. Her mama took good care of her until this accident. Live and learn!

It did. We had to get out of the house for my husband's eye dr. appointment this afternoon and that helped get my mind off it all.

It is what it is @MarieCoyle (sorry, it was fitting here!!) and I hope the mamma learned from it. I know I will put a few safety measures in place for next year.

That was a depressing and sad start to your day. Mother Nature can be so cruel. I hope that you can turn your day around.

Yes, it was. It helped getting out and away from the house. We had hubby's eye dr. appointment this afternoon and had lunch at Applebee's before his appointment. Then a quick shopping trip at Walmart. That helped.
