We’ve been eclipsed.

In the midst of all the understandable hullabaloo related to last night’s eclipse, I heard one comment that sat head and shoulders above the rest of the babble that commentators generate to justify their existence. An astronomer of some sort, a very practical and level headed woman who sees things from a sensible perspective, shared her knowledge which was considerable. Then she added her assessment of the whole shebang, and here I paraphrase her contribution. She commented that when you look at the whole event and the mechanics and timing etc., it makes you realise that although our mastery of technology is considerable and AI can turn all sorts of tricks, when we stand in front of nature in all its grandeur and immense power it should make us remember that we’re really not up to very much ourselves. There’s nothing we can do about an eclipse other than marvel. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are human beings that you care for them?”
