Today August 13 is the day my mother’s name appears in the Latvian calendar so it is her names day. Lots of good memories how we celebrated back in NYC and once in Latvia. Back in NYC I was into music of various genres and one of them was country. When the Oak Ridge Boys came out with the song “Elvira” mom rolled her eyes and said that is not how you pronounce my name. Well, she wanted her name not to be pronounced with a hard I but this way Elveera. I hope you understand and in remembrance, “Mom, this song is for you!”. “Happy Name’s Day!”
The photo is of her while at university in Riga. And online found the meaning of her name—Elvira is associated with a goddess of fate and childbirth in Latvian mythology.
