Where Did Our Love Go? - "You Oughta Know"

…when you have the chance to end a music series with both barrels blazing, you should take it. Every single time. And so I’m taking it. Alanis Morissette came out on fire with her incendiary 1995 hit, “You Oughta Know.”
Alanis didn’t bother with acceptance, or even gloomy self-reflection. Glowing white-hot with anger, Morissette gave two extended middle fingers to her ex, kicking down the bridge before burning it. Then she burned other bridges just because they reminded her of that bridge..
Turns out the ex is with a new love interest. So Alanis went after her, too.
It was the ultimate in feminine pissed off-ness.
The single is certified Platinum in Austrailia, New Zealand, and the U.K. It charted in 12 countries, reaching the Top 10 in five of those. It was nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning two.
People, for some reason, seem very interested in the subject of Alanis’ ire, much like they are fascinated with figuring out who “You’re So Vain” is about. Who cares? Alanis isn’t saying, and do you think this guy is going to proudly stand up and say “Yep! That was me!” Don’t worry about it. Enjoy the song.
(Alanis is on tour at the moment. I’ve seen her twice, I highly recommend going if you can.)
So keep in mind next time you try to write a breakup song. You can write a sad song, or, you can throw verbal hand grenades at the one that wronged you. Whichever format works for you. This is Where Did Our Love Go? signing out.

Alanis was a favorite of mine and I had her Album Jagged Little Pill where I sang all the songs in that album. For some reason, there's not a single song there I didn't like.
When played on the radio though, explicit words were edited. But I would utter them loudly when I was singling along.

“Goodbye and good riddance” breakup songs are terrific! I always point to Lindsey Buckingham, who wrote that break-up gem “Go Your Own Way” about Stevie sleeping with Don Henley, and all she got to do on stage was stand there, shake a tambourine, seethe, and sing backup.
