The summer heat abates

The world has fallen so quiet tonight. Even my neighbour is not filling the air with silly blethers and shriekish laughter, and her dog is either dead or has barked itself hoarse. Silence is just so charming a state to happen upon. There’s plenty of communication going on in the sky of course but silence still reigns. Stars wink at each other knowingly, shreds of cloud chuckle noiselessly when they tickle each other, and invisible, space dwelling lovers float around with goofy smiles on their ghoulish faces sighing inaudibly. Cold air moves around my garden late tonight, prompting words like shiver and frisson to come to mind as light from the moon dresses the grass in silver. Strange shapes loom in the dark under the skirts of the fir trees and for the first time since March my skin feels cold all over.
