We watched a Robotics Playoff today

The photo was taken by Vince at the West Australian Robotics Playoffs (WARP), part of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Teams build large, sophisticated robots which have to perform specific tasks. In this year’s competition, the robots have to gather up a heap of balls and shoot them into a chute (see what I did there?).
Several of our great/grand nephews are involved in the event. The winner of the state finals will compete nationally, and the national winner will then go on to compete against other countries. Last year the WA team did very well in America so they’re hoping to do well again.
It’s hard to explain the competition and the photo doesn’t help much. The robots are built by the teenagers and there are strict rules. I think there is footage on YouTube but ChatGPT wasn’t able to give me a genuine link. We only had time to watch two heats but I could understand how the kids get really involved in the process.

That sounds terrific! Can your grand-nephews build one that’ll be able to put a fitted sheet on my bed?

The University of Denver across the street from me holds an international robotics competition. I wonder if that's the American one you talked about. Probably not, but that would be kind of neat.

Robotics are really getting popular nowadays. Here there are schools that are specializing on robotics as part of their curriculum. Though l haven’t seen a full blown competition happening yet but l can see some exhibitions here and there. I think as they grow competition will soon follow.
