The alphabetical list of songs celebrating New Orleans ends today. We’ll get into the top ten tomorrow, then we’ll move on to New York City! Today we’ll close up the “regular” list with a song that I hope everyone was waiting for. How could you ignore this one??? Walking to New Orleans - Fats Domino Well duh. There are some songs that scream “you’d better NOT leave me off!”, and this was one of them. Don’t you love how songwriters get inspired? Fats Domino was performing in Lafayette, Louisiana and songwriter Bobby Charles, who’d written “Before I Grow Too Old,” stopped by the dressing room and talked. Domino invited Charles to stop by and see him at his home in New Orleans, to which Charles replied, “I don’t have a car. If I go to New Orleans, I’ll have to walk.” Two million copies of the single sold later…. Hey, let’s play “six degrees of this countdown.” Earlier I used the Johnnie and Jack song “South in New Orleans.” Bobby Charles appeared on stage with The Band during “The Last Waltz” concerts and sang “South in New Orleans.” Fats Domino was one of the great pioneers in early rock and roll, and a proud native of New Orleans. No tribute to the Big Easy would be complete without him.
