Recently, I did a music series of songs with natural disasters, including hurricanes. Why am I bringing this up? Because a storm might be hitting the east coast (particularly, Florida) of the United States within 48 hours. And it’s a coincidence, but the storm will be named Dolly. It’s just bad timing, coming so soon after Dolly Parton’s death - face it, she was a national treasure. But when it comes to naming storms, the names are predetermined by the World Meteorological Association, on lists used every six years. The names are alphabetical, and alternate between men’s and women’s names. Dolly is simply the next name on the current list. And it’s possible that the name could be used again down the road. If a storm is particularly destructive, the name is retired. Melissa was the last name retired, in 2025. So unless Dolly causes a lot of damage, it wouldn’t be retired and we might potentially see it again. So, if you see Tropical Storm Dolly coming up here soon, keep in mind it’s not a tribute to our late, great legend, rather, just a coincidental name on a list. The storm will have to reach sustained winds of at least 39 mph (63 kph) to get named a Tropical Storm. So while the storm is forming over the Atlantic, it’s just a matter of how strong it gets.
