My central air is finally working again! Happy Dance!

Due to a delay on one part that had to be ordered, it took nearly a MONTH to get it repaired. It was a big fix, the regulator was out, as well as some other problems and parts. It took the technician nearly 5 hours to fix it, and he is experienced and good. He had to pull out some parts to replace others and then put the other parts back in, if that makes sense. He blew out the water lines, put in new filters, etc. , and when he took out the coolant to replace one part he said too bad, this should have been replaced long ago, so he put in all new coolant. All I can say is what a huge difference it makes!
We were fortunate to get a good window unit from a friend--it was even brand new in the box. I was so thankful, it really helped a lot. But when all was done and the central AC was finally up and running, we just couldn't believe how cold it was in here. I had it set on our old settings, but it works so, so much better with the new coolant and all the fixes. I still think it was foolish that the corporation that runs this complex didn't just replace the unit. The fix was way over $3,000. I've lived here 13 years and it was a new complex then, so everything was new. It seems foolish to put that kind of money in an old unit, but hey, it's not my choice. They replaced the compressor, a few years ago with a big fix and it was about the same amount. So they have over $6,000 in fixes for the AC in 3 years. I think that's insane.
But I'm so, so happy it's fixed! Yay!

Its never foolish with how hot it's been. I do not think people know how hot its been because of AC i hope they never find out because it used to be never this hot.

@crossbones27 Seasons are changing and more dramatic!! I used to never be this cold here in winters. Yes, we would have 2-3 nights of low temps (under 20) and freezes, but nothing like the numerous days we had last year. Same with the heat.

We seem to have more and more extreme weather. I don’t really mind winter because I’m used to it, and I hate 100 degree days. But extremes are hard to get through.

Almost $7k in three years for repairs seems crazy. As we know, unfortunately things just don’t last like they used to. Kind of like a car- when the expense to fix it is more than the car is even worth, it’s usually just not worth it.

I just don't understand the logic in throwing money away. Of course if you are a homeowner and knowledgeable about fixing such things, you can eliminate the labor costs and make it a lot less money to fix something, but that is rare to do now.

I am most definitely very grateful it’s fixed before the heat wave resumes. Son doesn’t do so well when it’s super hot. And,it’s hard to sleep. But OH I hate the electric bill so much. We don’t run the AC all the time-only when it’s miserable outside.

It seems to me they raise our rates constantly and it’s very stressful. But I know it is happening everywhere.

She bought it thinking she would need it because her central air went out during the pandemic and they told her that the parts could take months. She got lucky and they did not take that long. She kept the portable unit thinking she might as well in case it happened again, thankfully it didn’t.

Wow that sure is a lot in repairs they have had to pay. Yikes. Doesn’t seem profitable to do things that way but I’m sure they have a reason. When I read the first part of your paragraph I thought oh my gosh they must have been sweltering. I’m glad the neighbor had a window unit they loaned you. We would love central air. We have 5 window units.

I have lived in homes with window units. I felt they were more expensive to run than central AC. I am a renter, so I don't have a choice, but in hot climates central AC seems to be much more efficient.

@MarieCoyle Yeah the heatwaves are terrible. Some parts of our country are under water because of the constant heavy rain, poor drainage, and of course corrupt officials.
Today, Sunday, we have a power outage because of the el niño, our power supple is affected. So the power grid has to conserve our power. Power will be back at 5pm today.

It used to be that heating and air conditioning, and home appliances, lasted a very long time. Now they are not made as well, and they don't. It's the same with cars. They seem to want things to break down so that we have to go out and spend more money to get new things.

Wow, I can only impinge how much it would have sucked to go a month without A/C, so thankfully you were able to score a window unit to use while you were waiting on the central system to get fixed.
I know that for all of us who live in the South, having a working A/C is critical and worth every penny spent. Unfortunately, too many people ignore their A/C until something goes wrong with it. And it's usually not a cheap fix when something does go out!
Anyway, I'm glad you got it working again and it is performing better than expected!

@MarieCoyle I agree. If people would just take the time to do preventative maintenance, they would more often than not save themselves a ton of money on costly repairs in the long run. But people are very shortsighted and don’t think about the long term consequences.

In the case of landlords or owners of corporations that own a lot of apartments, etc. the preventative maintenance is sorely lacking. I know ours used to be stellar, we had a wonderful maintenance crew that did all the things they were supposed to do. Then the company started cutting back on their expenses, and it's to the point that it's biting them big time, and a lot of money.

People do not realize, or maybe they are lazy, how important preventative maintenance is for these things. As the old saying goes, ''an ounce of prevention...''and oh, is that ever true.
I don't think there is such a thing anymore as a cheap fix...if there is, it's rare!

A few years ago mine broke down and instead of getting it repaired we got a new unit. It was over 10,000 dollars. Many years before that, the unit in my trailer broke down and instead of getting a new part, my uncle decided to get me a new unit. Back then the unit was over 5,000 dollars.

Yes, they are extremely expensive. But this kind of money in repairs every few years is not a smart way to spend money, at least not to me.
