This is a song written by Dolly Parton in 1973. She wrote the song as a farewell to her business partner and mentor Porter Wagoner. The song was released as a country single and became a commercial success for her. It went to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Dolly re-recorded it for the soundtrack of the movie in which she starred with Burt Reynolds, “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."
Which is a musical romantic comedy and well worth watching. I love the simple and sentimental way Dolly sang this song, and it is my favorite version. I know many of you might point out the success of the version recorded by Whitney Houston for her movie “The Bodyguard," which won Grammys. I agree it is also worth watching the movie and listening to her version.

@Ineeddentures I went through the disco phase in NYC during my young adult days and other kinds of loud and pulsating dance music I am not a fan of; I prefer the music of the oldies songs you could dance to,

Crikey it's really hard
Dolly's version is good
But Whitney's version was awesome
But I never ever got into the song until I met Yvonne and Sarah Washington's Dance Version came on just after we had had our first ever dance together and we stayed on the dance floor and danced to it
I remember looking at Yvonne and thinking
I will always love you,
And here we are, 29 years later almost to the day
And I will always love her.

@Ineeddentures it was Dolly's version that always brought tears to my eyes in the movie. Whitney did a good job, but it was so forceful and just came at you. Sarah just made it for cancing and not into that kind of music now. Get a guitar and sing her the song.

And millions of people all over the world who would never have probably heard Dolly for the chance to dance to a modern funky upbeat happy version of the song
The song is outwith my vocal range
But I did sing If Not For You for Yvonne on her 60th Birthday at her birthday party

Dolly’s is a sweet version, but I prefer Whitney’s more powerful rendition. She sings it likes she means it, where Dolly sounds like she is just saying it to pacify someone,

I did not know that the late Dolly Parton record the song "I Will Always Love You" which was sung by the late Whitney Houston.
