This country song was written by Dolly Parton and was first performed by the American country singer Emmylou Harris in the 1970s. It is featured on her album Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town. Dolly wrote the song to describe her mother’s experience and disappointment of her husband’s lack of affection and occasional affairs. Her mother had the best interests of her family at heart and attempted to do the best for her family even standing by her husband through difficult times. In 1976, Dolly recorded her own version of this song. I have included a picture taken of my father and me on the rooftop of our apartment building in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY. It is the last photo of us together since I was ten years old and that year he died.
