Just take the top off the butter

Back in 1998, we stayed several nights in a hotel in Paddington, London. Our niece had inspected several hotels and said this one at least had clean sheets. This seemed a bit surprising to us but once we were booked in we had a better understanding of hotels in that area. Her parents were staying there too but had arrived the day before us. When we met up with them, they warned us that, when we went to the dining room for breakfast, to only scrape the top of the butter dish. This was because the containers were never cleaned but were just filled with more butter each day. If you dug deep into the container the butter could be rancid. I have enough material to write another post about this hotel. Watch this space! The photo is of the butter stamp that my parents used when they were making and selling butter commercially.
