So this comedy is a send up of Northern English working class communities, centered in the Phoenix Club , what we call a Working Mans Club in England. It's where hard working people and the retired go to drink cheap beer, have a vape and watch variety acts, of all description. All the family can go and they can be lively. The fictional Phoenix Club club is run by Brian Potter, a wheelchair bound but resilient proprietor, played by the brilliant Peter Kay. It's his job to run the club at a profit and put on acts the locals enjoy, from singers to magicians, strippers to psychics, you name it. The club is full of regular and funny characters and the adult humour is easy to set up from there. Again it will be lost in translation to foreigners as its very parochial but the visual gags and setups may still work. It's also a show you can watch over again and still laugh. Kay is a genius at working class humour and manages it without offending anyone of race, creed, sexuality or size. It's a must see but only ran for two seasons for some reason.
