Okay, who wasn’t waiting for this one? Musically this is all over the place, so you’re going to have a country classic, a pop classic, and THIS in the next three days. Just another countdown from the hillbilly. Here’s today’s toast to the Big Apple. New York Groove - Ace Frehley You can do magic with this song! You’re winning!! Can’t shake loose from this music, can you! Now, why did I just mention the name of those three songs? They were all written by the same guy who wrote this song! That’d be Russ Ballard, whose voice you know: he was the lead singer on Argent’s big hit “Hold Your Head Up.” Now, here’s a kicker for you: Ballard is British. In fact, this song was originally recorded by a British glam band named Hello, in 1975. If you want to know what their version sounds like, you can either find it on YouTube or listen to the Ace Frehley solo version from 1978, because, honestly, he lifted his recording note-for-note from the original. This was the only successful song from any of the four Kiss members’ solo albums that were bulk released in 1978. And I will confess, for someone who wasn’t that big on Kiss (I like the songs most Kiss fans don’t: “Beth” and “Hard Luck Woman”), I put a LOT of money in the jukebox at the USO club on the base in Orlando to play this song.
