I had heard the term 'manosphere' several times over the last few months. I finally did a deep dive and want to pass this on. Do you have a son or know of one who is getting toward his teen years and spends a lot of time online? You might want to read this. There is a four-episode drama series on Netflix entitled "Adolescence". It is about a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller who stabbed his classmate Katie to death. It examines the school where they both went and what the kids were into and what was going on online. A psychologist examined him over time and forced him to confront his toxic views on women and finally got him to a dramatic murder admission. His poor father questioned his parenting and was devastated. What did this 13-year-old come across online? The term 'manosphere' first appeared on Blogspot in 2009, but such beliefs have traveling around the internet since the 1990s and before. It is full of sexism and hate. It targets both men and boys and promotes narratives that normalizes misogyny, rape, harassment of women, racism, often blaming feminism and such progressive movements for men's frustrations. It even went to the point of pushing regressing gender roles, self-harm and even suicide. Teen boys are interacting with these websites and communities online at an alarming rate. Young boys are not able to see the red flags and so the parent needs to help the child feel comfortable in coming to them to discuss any topics that come up while they are online. Being taught critical thinking so they question things they come into contact with and in some cases, parents need to supervise their activity while online. An app called Blue Canary is one that helps with these things and parents can use that they put on their phones and they can keep track of what their teen does while online. What do you think? I was astounded by the realization that this is going on in this country. Young men are being taught to hate women and to be hateful and treat women as lower life forms.
