Goodfellas was the greatest Scorsese movie by far but this one was not too far behind in the genre. Its basically using the same formula and cast and bringing to life that era of the Italian Mafia in America. It just looks so period and stylish and the actors enjoying the mayhem Pesci's character creates. De Niro is the Jewish mobster being handled in Vegas by Joe Pesci's Italian mob guy from Atlanta and they carve the town up between them. Some of it doesn't really make sense but its all about the look, the feel, the snappy dialogue and soundtrack, of course, the brutality a plus. Even the silencers are period correct. The violent reality was probably far worse back then but we just loved this stuff at arms length. Pesci plays the same psychotic character style as Goodfellas and Deniro a tad hammy as Rothstein, the casino manager. Sharon Stone was on top slutty form as the gangsters mol, and an assortment of unruly characters kept the film moving forward in the direction fans of the genre wanted. It was in that glory decade of the 1990s mob film as the new millennium failed to deliver any decent Italian mobster movies thereafter. Enjoy them if you haven't seen them kids.
