Are there any foods that are common place now that were not around when you were a child ?

@traceyjayne Coffee was rare except for Camp Coffee used when baking coffee cake. Olive oil was only available in the chemists because it was just used medicinally - to clean out ears I think.

I didn’t see as much chicken as I do now. I can name six famous chicken chains in the United States, when as a kid it was KFC (then only referred to as Kentucky Fried Chicken), and to a much smaller extent, Church’s Chicken. Now we have chains everywhere! Home made fried chicken was always popular, but not so much going out to eat it.

Sushi for sure did not exist, in the north of Italy even pizza was not there when I was a child. When we had pizza the first time we thought it was nothing to be excited about. I still think the same.

There are dozens - pizza, dip, broccoli, most cheeses other than Cheddar. Many foods were seasonal too - watermelon, most fruits.

This foods might have existed when I was a child, but I was never exposed to them, for instance tacos, and fajitas.

Oh loads of things. Pasta that wasn't spaghetti hoops in a can. Peppers and aubergines that are not bitter. Sweetcorn and pumpkins, passion fruit, mangoes, sweet potatoes, seedless grapes, kiwi fruit, papaya, sugarsnap peas and mangetout, blueberries. I'm sure there are loads more. Then all the ready-made things like cakes and sandwiches and ready meals of all kinds. And coffee of course - only instant. Yesterday my colleagues bought lunch and they were talking about the cost of a Tesco 'meal deal' (for non-Brits: basically the price of a bundle of things such as a sandwich, a drink and a snack of some kind like a pack of crisps or a biscuit or a carton of prepared fruit). One remarked on how much the price had increased since he was a child (he's 18). The other said 'I expect they were a lot less when Fleur was a child!'. I replied that they hadn't been invented when I was a child and in fact ready-made sandwiches weren't even a 'thing' then; if you wanted a sandwich you made it yourself. They stared at me like I was from another planet. The past really is another country.

Yes, pizza was not there when I was young. also noodles. It was mostly rice and wheat dishes with locally grown vegetables.

This one hit different for me too, growing up we never had all this shawarma and smoothie bowl craze everywhere. Now every corner got somebody selling something foreign, even small mama put has started selling noodles by the roadside. Times has really change , food has travelled past borders these days.
