Public transportation is on strike here

Zagreb, Croatia (Hrvatska)
September 28, 2026 4:38am CST
It began at 3:30 a.m. and it's still ongoing and the strikers won't tell how long will it last. It's very unfortunate if your're dependable on a public transportation. All those slogans that we should use less cars and now this. The city rents bicycles too but those were already taken in the morning so you either walk today, get a lift, get a taxi (if it shows up) or ask a boss (if you can) to not appear at your job today just, wht about other days. Noone expected this and the mayor tried to find a solution but sindicates said no. Bus drivers and tram drivers are generally late here and they are mostly rude and ,yes i know they work for long hours but their paychecks are high and they want more. Only 2 trams were driving today and they did that until 11 a.m. and it's 11.35 a.m. at my place, Zagreb, Croatia. There would be noone cleaning the streets or picking up our garbage so bins would be smelly again and they are often like that, i must complain. This city is turning into, not sure anymore but to stop entire city just for your goals, i don't support that. Sindicates are really cruel.

I hope the strike is finished and that people will be able to commute the bus again to go to work.

@valherma00 I thought it’s already finished. That sounds so bad. I hope the situation in your country will get better.

tomorrow will be the 3rd day of strike and our mayor is only saying and advising people to ask for neighbours for a ride and such and to show solidarity. i have personal reasons to be disappointed by this city and by this county but this is awful and feels not real. we can clearly see how some workers, without college diploma want higher paychecks than teachers, for example and are so selfish and inhumane;they decided to return a city hospital bus. it's embarassing. also, the garbage trucks are not picking up our waste too. i once said in anger i don't want to live in this city and it's like i foreseen it. thank you. i also hope this won't last forever. and, yes, i have some paperwork for a free ridecard and they want me to come in person while i write to them how can i come, in this state of the city. very rude company.

well ,that kind of strike i can justify (though it will be hard for regular people) and if it's not entirely a strike;leaving some buses to drive people.no, here is only 1 tram and 2 buses (including a bus to hospital near me) and that's it. i can't comprehend how society here is so selfish. a bus/tram driver wants to have a paycheck above an educated person, and double higher. and the strike is legal and they blame the major. in other cities, drivers are paid half less. this city is getting more expensive for me and if i could live in another city or even country, i would go.

I am aware that there is a transportation strike going on in my area as well; they are protesting the rising oil prices in recent days. Most schools cancel classes, but most employees are expected to report to work. When public transportation stops, there are usually free busses that go around, but you have to deal with uncomfortable seats and packed busses because so many people are trying it out.

a strike at your place too? yes, that's the right thing to do, to not stop the traffic entirely. here, only 1 tram was driving and 2 buses, including a bus for this one hospital. i am disappointed in society here and this city is getting too expensive for me. yes, i remember those crowds too. for passengers like us, there is no other choice. tomorrow is the 3rd day of strike here.

Here, bus drivers don’t get paid well at all. But even so, I don’t remember them ever going on strike.

at a full strike, i don't remember it all too and i've been studying in college here since 2005 and perminently moved (from a a small town) since 2014 so, yes, i get it if they made some bus or tram lines less frequent but this; i thought they were kidding at first. okay, some people took trains instead but, it's awful what it's happening. i don't recognise this city anymore. times are cruel but people should stay objective, i think. it's good i don't go anywhere and my thoughts to find something close to my flat, though it's hard, in times like this, it's a saver.

that's why i want to work near my residence also, i was disappointed by this city before but my glass is really full this time. that educated people get less paycheck than these drivers and they want more. also, how come they have no humantiy towards older people, people with difficulties and so on. not all people are rich and can afford a taxi or have a car. i wanted to get back to my old town 2 years ago but there is nothing for me there but since this is happening in a capital city, it's the same for me. the city is so expensive yet, it's collapsing on a normale things like this. also garbage trucks are not coming for 2 days and tomorrow is the third days of strike and i think it will get smelly at the streets.

that's good. here, in big cities and in other parrts of europe, buses and trams are normal thing to see but in smaller places, buses and motorbikes as mostly on roads, including cars. cars are in a big cities too but not evryone has a car or can afford it. yes, ordinary people need to find a solution on their own and it's not right. it's sad what's happening here and in general.
