The first of the month takes us off to another place. While I’m doing that in my car, we’ll all make a trip west in song. There are two countdowns this month, one for Los Angeles and one for Hollywood. Let’s get the ball rolling with a one-hit wonder!
Beach Baby - The First Class
You can tell a British guy wrote this. “From July ‘til the end of September.” Um…NO. Our beach seasons don’t run like that.
The guy who wrote this, John Carter, has been very successful in his songwriting history. Among the hits he’s written are “Little Bit o’Soul,” “Tossing and Turning,” and “Can’t You Hear My Heart Beat.” So I won’t chide him too much for not knowing when American summers are.
The First Class was a band that Carter more or less put together to record some of his songs. This was their only hit. It has a Beach Boys feel without copying the Beach Boys, and it is a happy-sounding song (despite the fact that the boy and girl break up).
Beach Baby
Written by John Carter and Gillian Shakespeare
Recorded by The First Class
From Beach Baby, 1974

@rebelann — oh, that’s right, you’re one of the people drinking the coffee that I don’t drink (so much coffee has to be consumed in a day, and as I’m not doing my part I allocate my portion to others!).

Yeah, this is one of those “it’s so 70s” songs, isn’t it.

Not everyone hits the nail on the head with every song. This song is so much fun who really cares.

I saw the title and assumed it was a Beach Boys song. I forgot all about this one until I listened.
