Reading has many advantages

Reading has many advantages, and I don’t just mean transporting you to other worlds, using your imagination, learning from other people’s experiences and expanding your vocabulary (although it obviously helps with those as well). But I find it often helps to inspire better customer service too. While you can see people absorbed in their phones everywhere you look these days, you don’t see people snatching a spare moment to read quite so often. So when I’m standing in a queue and I get my book out, it seems to convey a subliminal message to the staff of ‘I have been waiting here for such an age that I’ve resorted to reading an actual book!!’ and they feel obliged to do something about it. It just happened when I went to the supermarket earlier. I would far rather read for a few minutes than have to deal with one of those awful self-checkout machines, so I got my book out while I waited (with several other people I might add) for the only till staffed by an actual human. They promptly opened another till and ushered me to it so I would be first through. Good service, although I have to admit I hadn’t even read a whole page and would have been happy enough to wait a bit longer and get a chance to read a few pages!

Ha I love this, reading in a queue is such a good trick. Funny that the staff felt bad and opened another till so fast. I would also pick a book over those self checkout machines any day.

I have tried to use them on several occasions, something always goes wrong and I have to stand there like a lemon while they send some teenage oik to sort it out.

@Fleura My phone has a Kindle app so I read too while waiting, I just don’t want to carry a book. My purse has a bad tendency to be too heavy.

@AmbiePam I understand that and I have thought about looking for something like that but it doesn't have the same effect on staff as a real book I think!

I love that idea and am going to pack a book to have handy when I'm stuck in a line. I also hate those self-checkouts and would rather wait in a line for a human than have to do it myself.

@Fleura that's a really nice advantage to shopping at Tesco.

Although we usually shop at Sainsbury's because it's our closest supermarket, I actually really like Tesco because they have a pledge that they will always provide a human if you want one. So if there are no tills open if you just go to one anyway a member of staff will immediately appear to attend to you

Reading is a good way to gain knowledge on how to follow our dreams of success.

That's interesting. I might try that next time we're queued at a checkout. We usually wait for a (wo)manned one rather than use the self-checkout.

I enjoy a good read. I carry an ebook most. The good thing about the ebook is that I have dozens of books, so I can read to suit my mood

I enjoy reading while travelling. Most of us have been accustomed to our phone so much
