Hey, didn’t I use this band — and this album — last month in the New York City countdown? Yes, I did, thanks for noticing!
Spoiler alert: if I move up to San Francisco for a countdown, you’ll see this song again! So, to the eternal chagrin of NJ Chic, here’s today’s song.
Kid Charlemagne - Steely Dan
Yes, it’s her favorite band.
(I think she does like them better than Rush, but that’s comparing fresh and frozen durian to her.
)
I mentioned this with “Truckin’” by the Grateful Dead: Owsley Stanley, the Dead’s drug supplier/manufacturer, is the inspiration behind this song. I didn’t know that back in the 70s when I had this song blasting in the car (on my 8-track player). Of course, back then, I didn’t know what “test tubes and the scales” meant. Ah, to be an ignorant teenager.
Well, I know all that stuff now. And I still love it.
Extra credit to Larry Carlton for the guitar work.
Kid Charlemagne
Written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen
Recorded by Steely Dan
From The Royal Scam, 1976

Thanks for the tune. I guess I have heard that one, but had no idea of the name.

Back in the mid-70s they played 8-9 songs in a row, then “back-announced” them (“that was…and before that….and before that….and we started off that set with….”). Given that songs were getting longer in the 70s, how could you remember the song you’d heard half an hour ago once they told you the name of it!

Steely Dan at their peak when even I bought their 45s.

How about that! I usually bought albums because they were $6 and singles were $1.29, so I was betting $4.70 that there’d be more good music on the album. In the 70s that was generally a safe bet.

You know how much I dig the Dan, but this as much Larry Carlton’s album as theirs. Dang he was amazing on that album.

@FourWalls - That he was. He did kind of make the album what it is.

Yeah, I was “oh, he’s a chemist.” Yes he was, an illegal one.

Carlton knocked it out of the park on the entire album.
